Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister Pham Binh Minh on February 23 voiced “suggesting the US to increase financial and technical support for Vietnam to bring its net emissions to zero by 2050 as committed at the COP26,” according to the Vietnam Government Portal (VGP News).
It is reported that this proposal was made during a meeting between Mr. Minh and US Presidential Envoy for Climate Change John Kerry, who is visiting Vietnam on February 22-25.
VGP News reported that Mr. Minh “emphasized that responding to climate change is an area of strategic cooperation between the two countries” and said that “the central and urgent task of the Vietnamese government to transform change the development model towards green, circular, low carbon.”
As VOA Vietnamese reported, at the Leaders’ Summit within the framework of the 26th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP26) last year, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said that Vietnam “will develop and implement strong greenhouse gas emission reduction measures with its own resources, along with the cooperation and support of the international community, especially developed countries, both in terms of financial and technology transfer, including implementing mechanisms under the Paris Agreement, to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.”
In addition to discussing climate change, according to VGP News, Mr. Minh also “thanked” the US government for supporting 29.1 million doses of vaccines through the COVAX mechanism as well as “appreciated” the US’s pledge to continue increasing the budget for remedial war consequences.
The Vietnamese government portal also quoted Mr. Minh as saying that Vietnam “wants the US to continue to give priority to supporting Vietnam in areas such as education-training, health, humanitarian, digital economy, etc.”
Writing on Twitter, Mr. Kerry on February 22 said it was “a great honor to return to Vietnam today” and said he “looks forward to building consensus on important actions to resolve the climate change crisis and accelerate the transition to a clean energy [based] economy.”
As VOA Vietnamese reported, the US Embassy in Hanoi said on February 23 that Mr. Kerry “will have a busy schedule with government partners, students, business leaders, and professionals” to support Vietnam’s COP26 goals.”
Earlier, the US State Department spokesman’s office released a statement, which said that Mr. Kerry went to Vietnam “to meet with government officials, representatives of social organizations and business leaders to build consensus on key actions to tackle the climate crisis and accelerate the transition to a clean energy economy.”
According to the US embassy in Hanoi, in addition to meetings with Vietnamese government officials, Mr. Kerry on February 24 was “delighted to meet Vietnam and US veterans.”
“They shared memories and thoughts about the past, present, and future of the Vietnam-US relationship,” the US embassy wrote about the meeting. “The US has always appreciated the sacrifices made by all parties and remains committed to building trust. Our mission is to find the dead together on all sides, clear unexploded ordnance, support people with disabilities, and deal with dioxin consequences.”
