Vietnam, along with 32 other countries, abstained from voting on a United Nations resolution requiring Russia to withdraw its troops from Ukraine. The new resolution was approved by the UN General Assembly on February 23 (local time) with 141 votes in favor of condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Six countries voted against: Belarus, North Korea, Eritrea, Mali, Nicaragua and Syria.
This is the fifth time Vietnam has abstained from voting on resolutions condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Vietnam once voted against the resolution to remove Russia from the UN Human Rights Council.
The vote this time took place on the occasion of the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of its neighboring country.
In his speech on February 22 at the 11th emergency session of the United Nations General Assembly (UN) meeting to continue discussing the situation in Ukraine, Vietnamese Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Head of Permanent Representative Delegation of Vietnam at the UN, expressed concern about the conflict situation in Ukraine over the past year as well as the recent worrying developments.
The Vietnamese representative also emphasized the need to comply with international law and the UN Charter, especially the most important basic principles of respecting independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and not using force and threats to use force.
