Truong Thi Mai rarely speaks but “deals dangerously,” men scared

Ms. Truong Thi Mai, Head of the Central Organization Commission and Permanent Secretary of the Secretariat

Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan is the woman with the highest position in the history of the Communist Party up to now. However, in terms of capacity, Ms. Truong Thi Mai is slightly better. Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan was elected to the Chairwoman of the National Assembly as a result of an arrangement between men and women. At the 12th National Congress in 2016, before withdrawing, Mr. Nguyen Tan Dung was able to bring Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan to the Four Pillars and Dinh La Thang to the Politburo. However, southerner Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan retired after only one term. Because Ngan is not able to fight with other men to keep her seat.

Ngan once climbed to 4th place in the regime, and now, Ms. Truong Thi Mai climbs to 5th place. Despite being a woman, some observers say Mai goes up by bravery, not by arrangement. The evidence is that currently Mai is concurrently holding two important positions in the Party, that is, the permanent position of the Secretariat and the head of the Central Organization Commission.

Since taking the position of Head of the Central Organization Commission, Mai is said to be quiet, less speaks on the media, not opens her lips like many others. Holding the position of Head of the Central Organization Commission from the beginning of 2021, it was not until July 2022 that she appeared in the media with statements about Party discipline. This is the statement after the Politburo ordered the expulsion of the Party and the arrest of two members of the Party Central Committee, Chu Ngoc Anh and Nguyen Thanh Long.

As head of the Central Organization Commission, Mai affirmed that: “In the future, I would like to ask Mr. Tran Cam Tu (Chairman of the Central Inspection Commission) to coordinate so that leaders of the organizations which have wrongdoings and being disciplined must be replaced by others and the disciplined cadres cannot sit there forever to influence the people’s trust in the Party, while tens of thousands of grassroots Party organizations do well.”

After Ms. Mai’s announcement, up to now, more members of the Party Central Committee and Politburo members have dismissed.

At that time, in terms of rank, Ms. Truong Thi Mai and Mr. Tran Cam Tu were equal, however, Mrs. Mai acts bravely. Currently, Ms. Truong Thi Mai is a permanent member of the Secretariat, can be considered as a deputy to General Secretaty Nguyen Phu Trong, and at the same time, she holds two major positions, it can be said that Mai’s strength has been increased significantly.

It is unclear if Mai has any ambition or not, because she does not appear to be an active person. However, when she struck a dangerous blow after observing political movements for a long time, she was trusted by Mr. Nguyen Phu Trong who gave her the position of his deputy to help him eliminate many of the officials he wants to attack.

Replacing Vo Van Thuong, Mai is considered to help Mr. Nguyen Phu Trong perform more difficult tasks. Because Mr. Thuong is the type of person waiting to told what to do and Mai is not, she also participates in internal fighting. She observed the fight carefully and also supported the General Secretary to take action, not just sitting around like Vo Van Thuong.

Mai is currently ranked 5th in the Politburo. In the Four Pillars, if there is a fluctuation such as incumbent Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh being deposed, or Mr. Nguyen Phu Trong suddenly falling ill, then the opportunity to enter the Four Pillars for her is very great. The political scene is still complicated, Trong is also old and weak. All possibilities are possible. Mai is becoming more and more harmful. (Translated)
