Children of leaders do not want to serve in army. When there is war, who will fight against enemy?

New recruits on enlistment day in Hai Duong

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict in recent days has become the focus of the world. One thing that is admirable is that, when Israel fell into a state of war, very few Israelis fled abroad.

On the contrary, tens of thousands of Israelis abroad are rushing to find ways to return home as soon as possible, to present themselves and participate in the fighting, with the same determination to protect their homeland of Israel. And that is why, in just 2 days, Israel was able to mobilize up to 300 thousand reserve troops.

On social networks, many comments say, “look at others, then think about us,” the war in Israel forces us to seriously look at the current situation in Vietnam, if a conflict with China occurs.

There are questions that need to be raised, such as: Why do Vietnamese youth always find ways to avoid military service? How many children of leaders are in the army?

Tuoi Tre newspaper, November 13, 2014, had an article titled “Children of officials rarely join the army.” The article said:

On the afternoon of November 12, the National Assembly discussed in groups the draft Law on Military Service (amended), with many concerns about military recruitment.”

Delegate Nguyen Van Thinh (Hung Yen) said that there is inequality in military service.

Mr. Thinh said: “I notice that every year when recruiting locally, very few children of officials and party members have to enlist. It is necessary to raise the issue that those who do not perform military service must do some alternative service to ensure fairness.”

Still according to Tuoi Tre newspaper, discussing alternative service, National Assembly delegate Dinh Xuan Thao (Hanoi) proposed studying and including in this Draft Law the form of payment or community service to replace military service.

Meanwhile, Mr. Nguyen Van Chien – Deputy Head of the Bac Ninh Provincial National Assembly Delegation – disagrees that the Law can be amended to allow payment of money, to perform “substitute obligations” without having to perform military service.

According to him, that is contrary to the Constitution and this is an unacceptable paradox. The reason, “Military service is the duty that a citizen is required to perform in the army or paramilitary organizations and does not have the right to choose.”

Expressing his opinion on this issue, a doctor who was a veteran in Hai Phong, speaking to Thoibao.de on condition of anonymity for security reasons, said:

I see that it creates inequality, it creates a gap between rich and poor in society. Using money to pay instead of [military] service will make society appreciate the role of money even more. Using money to replace that obligation will cause psychological social instability. When children of poor families don’t have money, people feel unfair, and that can lead to social discontent.”

Answering the question, is that the reason why so many families always try to find ways to avoid having their children do military service? This doctor said:

We can recognize the fact that almost no children or grandchildren of leaders serve in the military. The above phenomena will have an inevitable consequence: the Vietnamese army will become increasingly weak, its combat power will decrease, and it will be difficult for it to undertake the responsibility of protecting the homeland, once war occurs.”

In fact, the recent rescue flight case shows that many corrupt leaders with huge assets have sent their relatives abroad to settle. Meanwhile, Vietnamese businessmen and politicians are flocking to search for green cards in other countries, which is also very common. CEOs like Nguyen Phuong Hang, or National Assembly deputies like Pham Phu Quoc, Ms. Nguyen Thi Nguyet Huong, etc. all have Syrus or Maltese nationality.

Mr. Ho Chi Minh once said, “Our people have a passionate patriotism. It is a precious tradition of our people. From ancient times until now, every time the Fatherland was invaded, that spirit was excited, it formed an extremely strong and huge wave, it swept over all dangers and difficulties, it engulfed everything, both the country sellers and the country robbers.”

That is why public opinion believes that national leaders should not push all the responsibility for performing military service to the people. Meanwhile, leading cadres are always educated and study Ho Chi Minh’s ideology and ethics but do the opposite of Ho Chi Minh’s words.
