Today, August 2, at the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV)’s Central Committee Headquarters, the Politburo met to prepare for the extraordinary Central Committee Conference to elect the General Secretary.
To Lam with the ambition to manipulate power in the party
In this meeting, if To Lam succeeds in forcing 13 Politburo members to agree to the policy of unifying the two positions of General Secretary and State President like China, then Vietnam will begin a dark period. The origin of this dark period is the late General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, who gave To Lam too much power.
This meeting is to prepare for the extraordinary meeting of the Party Central Committee to elect a new General Secretary, which is scheduled to take place this August (possibly on August 10), instead of having to wait until the 10th meeting of the Party Central Committee (the 10th Central Committee Meeting) scheduled to take place in October this year.
This meeting includes 14 Politburo members chaired by To Lam. From the initial 18 members, the Politburo now has only 14 members (although before his death, Nguyen Phu Trong added 4 members): To Lam, Pham Minh Chinh, Phan Van Giang, Luong Cuong, Tran Thanh Man, Tran Cam Tu, Phan Dinh Trac, Le Minh Hung, Nguyen Trong Nghia, Bui Minh Hoai, Do Van Chien, Nguyen Hoa Binh, Nguyen Xuan Thang, Nguyen Van Nen.
This Politburo meeting is also to arrange personnel. Some figures who may leave: Deputy Prime Minister Le Minh Khai (from Bac Lieu), Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Dang Quoc Khanh (from Ha Tinh), Secretary of Quang Ninh Nguyen Xuan Ky (from Nam Dinh), Secretary of Ha Nam Le Thi Thuy (from Nghe An). As for Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha (from Ha Tinh), it is not known whether he will escape disciplinary action this time or not.
