EU says to support Vietnam towards green development plan

Mr. Frans Timmermans.

The European Union (EU) delegation to Vietnam on February 21 said that “the EU is ready to continue supporting Vietnam’s green transition.”

This statement comes four days after the Executive Vice President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans concluded his visit to Vietnam to continue discussing the important commitments made by Vietnam at the Summit on Climate Change in Glasgow, as well as discussing the EU’s support to Vietnam in its efforts to rapidly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Writing on its website, the Delegation of the European Union said that “Vietnam has great potential to continue developing renewable energy, and in the past few days we have discussed ways to apply EU’s expertise and financial support – for example on improving the grid, strengthening regulatory frameworks and investing in energy storage – to accelerate this transformation.”

The diplomatic mission said that during the three-day visit, Vice Chairman Timmermans had meetings with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Deputy Prime Minister Le Van Thanh, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Hong Ha, Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien, Minister of Agriculture Le Minh Hoan, and representatives of NGOs in Vietnam.

Vice-Chairman Timmermans was quoted as saying that “Vietnam has achieved high economic growth in recent decades.”

According to the Delegation to the European Union, Mr. Timmermans added: “My meetings with ministers in the Government have shown that Vietnam is well aware of the importance of climate and environmental protection if it wants to maintain the above growth rate: there is only one Vietnam, and our planet is also unique…”

The Delegation of the European Union said that Vietnam is “one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change” and that the Mekong Delta, a region with a population of 20 million and sufficient food production for 100 million people, is “a place exposed to many risks such as land subsidence, extreme weather patterns, saline groundwater or rising sea levels.”

According to the Vietnamese government’s portal, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh last November delivered what is considered an “important” speech at the Leaders’ Summit within the framework of COP26.

Chinh was quoted as saying that “as one of the countries most affected by climate change, Vietnam is making great efforts to respond to climate change and develop its economy to rise up, ensure a better life for all people, and at the same time make responsible contributions to the international community.”

According to the Vietnam Government Portal, he added: “We look forward to strengthening cooperation with international partners in investment and sustainable development programs and projects.”
